Two official sources: NOAA's Storm Prediction Center, which collects hail, wind damage, and tornado reports from trained spotters and the National Weather Service, and official National Weather Service airport weather stations, archived by Iowa State University's Iowa Environmental Mesonet. Distances are measured from the ZIP code center.

We flag it before you pay. If no severe weather was reported and winds stayed light at every nearby weather station, you'll see a calm-day notice and can choose "Get it anyway — $5". That report documents the calm conditions, which is useful for ruling a date out, but it won't show significant wind. If we find no records at all, there's nothing to buy and you aren't charged.
