Two official sources: NOAA's Storm Prediction Center, which collects hail, wind damage, and tornado reports from trained spotters and the National Weather Service, and official National Weather Service airport weather stations, archived by Iowa State University's Iowa Environmental Mesonet. Distances are measured from the ZIP code center.
You can search historical dates going back years. Note that NOAA finalizes its records over time, so events from the last few weeks may still be preliminary.

If you chose the Storm Day Report and NOAA logged no storm reports near your ZIP on that date, we tell you before you pay. You're then charged just $5 for the Wind Gust Report instead of $8, so you never pay for a storm list that comes back empty.
We flag it before you pay. If no severe weather was reported and winds stayed light at every nearby weather station, you'll see a calm-day notice and can choose "Get it anyway — $5". That report documents the calm conditions, which is useful for ruling a date out, but it won't show significant wind. If we find no records at all, there's nothing to buy and you aren't charged.
